The Scientific Research Institute of Electronics (NIIET, part of Element Group, MOEX: ELMT) is preparing its new RISC-V-based 32-bit microcontroller, the K1921VG11T, for mass production. Commercial shipping of the device is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The development of this part type was a collaborative effort between NIIET specialists and a transportation industry partner, for whom the compactness of the electronic component base is of vital importance.

The developers were tasked with maintaining the computational capabilities of the existing microcontroller while reducing its physical dimensions. Rather than developing a new die, NIIET specialists utilized a previously commercialized chip and housed it in a plastic LQFP-100 package, which had been formerly used for the K1921VG3T microcontroller. Functions not required for this specific project were not routed to external pins. For instance, in agreement with the customer, it was decided to omit external memory controller access (as the internal memory capacity is sufficient for a wide range of tasks), as well as Ethernet and USB interfaces, alongside several other I/O channels.

This approach made it possible to fully preserve the core functionalities of the microcontroller, including motor control capabilities, while significantly reducing its size and weight. It also shortened the development cycle and accelerated time-to-market. Furthermore, leveraging proven technological solutions prevented additional overhead costs for the customer.

The combination of high performance, compact design, and a comprehensive set of peripheral modules makes the new microcontroller highly required across various industries. Specifically, it can be used   in electronic control units (ECUs) for civilian transportation, navigation and telematics systems, motor control systems, and automated industrial process control systems.
